Hair Washing 101

I just read an article in "Glow" Magazine (the magazine that Shoppers Drug Mart puts out with the odd article, essentially just showcasing all the shit they want you to buy at Shoppers Drug Mart) saying in winter it is best to wash your hair twice a week.

Twice a week?

First of all, not gonna sell a lot of shampoo that way, Shoppers!

Then I got thinking.... I just had to blow a good chunk of change to fix my horrible hair.

It was a deal for    leopard spotting bleach 2" from my roots   highlights and a  butchering  cut from one of those "deal sites" where they oversold themselves and in turn hired some random people who "may" or "may not" be ACTUAL hairdressers.

I have no doubt in my mind that Polished & Pampered Wellness hired  Coulda just been random people armed with damaging bleach and determination. One never really knows these things.

I can't be certain, but it's possible that the girl that did my hair was related to the Travelocity Travelling gnome, was sprinting through Hamilton, and was given a job opportunity she SHOULD have refused.

I digress.

The orange/spotted/leopard/hack job that resulted was pretty awesome.

Just...  tear-inducingly horrific   awesome.

I'd post a picture, but I was too vain to have that shit documented.

The hair I wanted. (Via)

Essentially, what I got. (Various Sources).

So, after getting my money back (because the "salon" was a joke and ended up COSTING me 6 times the cost of the voucher to get my "hair did" properly), my hair is now totally fried.

Back to the hairwashing... maybe if I wear enough perfume AND hats, I can salvage the white-blonde-straw that I am currently fashioning as hair, via less damage by jumping on this minimalist hair washing bandwagon.

I almost feel deceived. Even at the NEW, qualified salon, the stylist cut SO MUCH HAIR OFF, then thinned it for good measure. You know, ensuring a mullet-like-style with regrowth.... trying to fix it.

But she flat ironed it all purrrdy, and it looked reasonable.
Then I went to a wedding.
And drank far too much.
And acted like a drunkard.
And broke my toe.
And came home.
And cleaned up puppy shit for 3 hours (another day, another blog post).
And then showered and washed my hair.

Dear god, it's like a dehydrated lion. A dehydrated lion with zebra stripes.

No V-O-5 hot oil can even begin to smooth this hot, or rather, dry, mess. (You know what else is a hot mess? My comma use. Another day, another blog post).

So... perhaps in an effort to keep the over-dyed, unhealthy, over-bleached, under appreciated hair that is left on my head, I may reduce hair washing.

Lord have mercy on my pillow.
And the complexion at my hairline.

    1. @Gia - Yeah, my roots get greasy, since they are normal healthy-ish hair. Boo.

  2. satin pillowcases are good for dry hair. least damaging thing to sleep on. also may want to look into wen. i'm obsessed with it. my hair has never been healthier, grown faster, or held color better (the color is pink. and the only reason i redo it is because my damn roots grow in).

    1. @steph gas - I remember reading your post and love of Wen. Not sure if I can get it in Canada, or justify the cost. Also? Satin pillowcases sound way too sexy for this newlywed. *har har*

  3. And THIS is why I'm afraid of hair stylists.

  4. Hair is over rated. Just buzz it off and let it grow back. Tell people you got it done for cancer. Or tell them the doctor said it wasn't contagious.

Twice a WEEK!!?? When you're working out regularly? My co-workers wouldn't let me in the building. My wife might not let me in the house, and certainly not the bedroom.

    1. @Keith - I honest to goodness understand Bald Britney. See, never thought of the working out because I have 2 injured hands and a broken toe. But yeah, that won't fly once I get a working treadmill (and my lazy ass ON said treadmill). Bummer. Regular washing it is!!

  5. I can't last more than one day without washing. That shit's gross. And when I find that someone else hasn't washed their hair in more than one day, my brain imagines stink fumes and flies buzzing around that person's head.

When my hair is dried as shit (read: always), I try to ease up on the hair dryer/ flat iron use. Trust me when I say, my hair sans heat-assitance looks like a fucking electrocution travesty. If I can do it, you can do it.

    1. @You're Lucky I Don't Have a Gun... - You and Keith make all-too-valid arguments that will both keep me smelling fresh AS WELL AS keep me married.

I seriously lol'ed at "fucking electrocution travesty"... I don't think I can let it go curly, mush it with mousse and let it air dry, due to the thinness and mullet-ness, so flat iron will have to happen. Or else lazy hair elastic.

      Yeah... probably lazy hair elastic.

  7. I wash mine every other day but sometimes I feel like it should be more. At least with a bad hair style it will grow out. Just a pain to have to deal with it until it does

    1. @Mynx - With my awful vegetarian diet, it takes forever for hair to grow out. It'll be my 25th anniversary before I'm free of this. Might just have to go with allover dark colour and hope for the best in the future.

  8. Right now I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week in my vain attempt to preserve the red without re-dying every week (Semi-Permanent=Will wash out of your hair, but not out of your towels)

Long ago when my hair was thoroughly fried, I stopped washing it every day (reducing to every other day, or if it didn't feel too gross, every third day) avoided blow-drying and straightening when possible and engaged in weekly mayonnaise shampoos which is as gross as it sounds, but works.

    1. @Yandie, Goddess of Pickles. - Red is such a pain to maintain!! And I hear you about the towels. I ruined a few after a dark brown semi back in December. I'll try every other day unless I get serious with the treadmill...

    1. @becca - Do you bleach/highlight? Use any special shampoo? Probably doesn't help I use whatever is in the shower (including the massive $3 grocery store bottle of harsh sudsiness).

  10. I have lovely curly hair. And I don't mean wavy. I've got corkscrew curls... and I love them. I only wash mine about 3x a week because it's better for my hair. If I was hitting the gym, which I'm not, I'd wash it on gym days. In the summer it gets washed 4. Humidity and all that BS.

    1. @Devon Mum - HEEEEEEEEEEEEELLO and welcome!! Thanks for taking the time to comment, I LOVE IT. I bet Bryl cream is smelly, which would be a deal breaker for me. Or grandpa-y smelling. BUT, that being said, beggars can't be choosers, so let's see if my hair gets that bad...

  13. I regularly color and destroy my hair. While only washing twice a week might work, you can still shower daily, just put your hair in a ponytail and try not to get it wet. Also, I really love Organix Morrocan Argan Oil shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil. But any shampoo containing morrocan argan oil is genius. And make sure your shampoo is sulfate free, and paraben free if possible. The I buy the Organix brand here in the US for $6 at Wal-mart. It's the a smaller looking bottle but the same volume as most standard sized shampoos.

  14. I have very curly hair. And I haven't used shampoo in years. I wash with friction (using the pads of my fingers) and hair conditioner. Best thing for curls, since curly hair is very dry! I don't smell and there are no flies buzzing around my head, promise. ;)
